I'm trying to get some gospel together for my first Advent sermon, and this is helping me through that.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20010538.post-58049987243131292182006-11-30T22:53:00.000-05:002006-11-30T22:53:00.000-05:00Milton,

To most of them, he was not a person; he was a bell wearing a red apron. It's so easy to de-personalize anyone or anything that dares to shove us out of the lap of complacency we call home. And the easiest way to do that is simply to ignore them. I've made a sincere effort over the last several years to look people squarely in the eye who I formerly would have ignored in order to protect my comfort zone--the bell ringers, the guy pushing newspapers at the corner of Evans and 281, even the person offering me free samples at Costco, the sad faces of war victims. I knew all along that to "see" someone is to give them the dignity and honor they deserve, but I practiced selective inclusion anyway, probably justifying it by saying I only had so much time to get involved in other people's lives. What an idiot.

I'm beginning to think your work as a chef is a ruse. How can you cook all day and then manage to crank out such wonderful essays on practically a daily basis? By the way, the recipes are wonderful, too.

I gather you are turning 50. Welcome into my decade. It's not so bad......really.
Bill HillAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20010538.post-45559257714801832212006-11-30T22:31:00.000-05:002006-11-30T22:31:00.000-05:00Thanks for the link!
