advent journal: today there was not enough light

today there was not enough light

to light the morning sky
before I got to work

to help my student see
the error of his ways

to last till the end of the afternoon
for me to get home before dark

to burn away the clouds
of grief that cover our house

so we sat together on the couch
surrounded by schnauzers

and watched the little tree lights
do their best to shine
